As a young man growing up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I was always impressed with Bruce R. McConkie who was serving as a member in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He had written books which I read and often referenced. My favorite book that I read from him was A New Witness to the Articles of Faith. It was a lengthy book; however, I felt the spirit so strong as I read through each page. Then, it was but a few weeks after reading it, I was called to be the Elders Quorum President in the ward. I will be forever grateful for the passion that Elder McConkie has for the scriptures and towards Jesus Christ.
I was on my mission when he passed away in 1985. And it was just shortly before he passed away that he spoke on his vision of Gethsemane and witnessing Christ on the Cross. For years afterwards, I loved quoting from this talk. It always made me better visualize the events that took place.
